DAVID delivers the strongest theatrical opening in Angel’s history and ranks among 2025’s top animated releases.
Provo, Utah — December 22, 2025
Angel (NYSE: ANGX) reported a $22 million domestic box office opening weekend for its animated musical DAVID, marking the largest theatrical debut in the company’s history. The film now holds the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a faith-based animated feature, surpassing Angel’s own The King of Kings earlier this year.
With DAVID, Provo-based Angel has released two of the ten highest-grossing animated domestic films of 2025, alongside The King of Kings, which has generated approximately $61 million to date.
Key opening-weekend benchmarks include:
- Highest-grossing faith-based animated theatrical opening to date
- Angel’s strongest three-day theatrical opening, exceeding Sound of Freedom’s $19.6 million debut in 2023
- Two animated titles from Angel ranking among 2025’s domestic top ten in the category
“Families responded strongly to this story from the outset,” said Brandon Purdie, Angel’s Head of Theatrical. “We appreciate the support from exhibitors and expect continued interest through the holiday period.”
Earlier this year, Angel acquired the DAVID franchise and related intellectual property in partnership with 2521 Entertainment. The deal includes both the feature film and a five-part animated television series, positioning the property as a long-term asset within Angel’s content portfolio.

“King David’s story has enduring relevance, and this adaptation was designed as a shared theatrical experience for families,” said David L. Hunt, co-founder and chief creative and content officer at 2521 Entertainment.
DAVID traces the biblical figure’s journey from shepherd to king, focusing on themes of faith, leadership, and moral conviction, culminating in the confrontation with Goliath.

The film features original music by Phil Wickham and has earned an A CinemaScore along with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes Popcorn (Audience) Score. International rollout begins this week across more than 42 markets, listed below:
