Autonomous Solutions Inc. (ASI), a Utah robotics company specializing in off-road vehicle automation, has launched a new construction-focused business unit—ASI Construction—with global investor SoftBank Group Corp.

The new division will develop and operate autonomous construction vehicles, targeting an industry struggling to keep up with growing infrastructure demands amid an acute shortage of skilled machine operators. ASI CEO Mel Torrie said the move is especially timely: “In low- to no-population areas, automation of construction equipment is critical to address the chasm between ever-growing demand and a dwindling labor supply. Since selling ASI Mining, we’ve been able to expand rapidly into heavy construction, where we see enormous opportunity.”

The launch follows ASI’s strategic divestiture of ASI Mining, which was sold to Swedish industrial equipment manufacturer Epiroc in 2024. That sale allows ASI to focus more aggressively on heavy construction, agriculture, logistics, and landscaping—sectors where automation can serve as both a workforce multiplier and operational accelerator.

A 25-Year Journey to Scalable Autonomy

Founded in 2000 in Mendon, Utah, ASI is marking its 25th anniversary with a major milestone: more than 100 off-road vehicle models have been automated using the company’s OEM-agnostic Mobius® platform. From mining trucks and construction bulldozers to agricultural tractors and landscaping equipment, Mobius has been deployed across a range of industries.

“From the beginning, we designed ASI’s platform to be modular and hardware-agnostic,” said Torrie. “That approach has allowed us to automate dozens of vehicle types affordably and at scale—without custom builds for each one.”

Mobius, ASI’s fleet orchestration software, enables centralized control of multiple autonomous vehicles—either locally or remotely—from a single command center. It’s used to streamline site operations, reduce idle time, and improve equipment utilization. According to Process Improvement Manager Jed Judd, “Our tech enables customers to shift people out of cabs and into higher-value roles. Mobius doesn’t just drive—it helps optimize how an entire fleet operates.”

Clients include major OEMs such as John Deere, GM, Stellantis, Ford, Komatsu, Mack (and others shown below), validating ASI's approach of delivering autonomy as a flexible upgrade path rather than requiring full equipment replacement.

Scaling Up: Lehi Office and Team Growth

To support the new construction unit and broader growth, ASI has doubled its workforce in the past year and recently opened a new office in Lehi, embedding itself in the heart of Utah’s Silicon Slopes tech corridor.

“We chose Lehi to elevate our presence in the Salt Lake City metro and better serve global clients,” said Torrie. “It’s a strategic step forward for ASI and a milestone in our 25-year history.”

The company’s headquarters and 100-acre vehicle proving ground remain in the small, Cache Valley town of Mendon, near Logan, where ASI continues to test and refine its hardware and software in real-world conditions.

Legacy in Mining, Foundation for Construction

Before the sale to Epiroc, ASI Mining had deployed autonomous systems at 11 global mine sites, working with a variety of fleet management providers to enable OEM-agnostic automation. That experience, which included haulage, dozing, blasting, and drilling, now serves as a foundation for ASI’s next chapter in construction.

“We’re not starting from scratch in construction,” Torrie said. “We’re building on proven systems and a mature autonomy stack that has already been battle-tested in some of the harshest environments in the world.”

To commemorate its anniversary and showcase its evolving mission, ASI has released a new brand video featuring its team, platform, and company vision. The video offers a behind-the-scenes look at ASI’s platform strategy and engineering culture, and highlights the company’s approach to real-world robotics.
