Driven by Discovery: The Story of Vidya Chavan and Her Love for Microbiology
Sandy, Utah — June 30, 2026
Vidya Chavan is a microbiologist at 4Life Research — a Utah-based direct-selling company founded in 1998 by David and Bianca Lisonbee that specializes in immune system support supplements. Known as "The Immune System Company," 4Life focuses on products containing Transfer Factor, molecules designed to educate and support immune cell memory.
Chavan completed her Master of Science in Applied Genetics and a Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) in Bengaluru, India. In 2007, she was selected for a six-month research project at Université de La Réunion, France, where she studied cancer cell lines — an international research assignment she still counts among her proudest career milestones. "Successfully completing this project was a significant milestone in my academic journey and remains a proud moment in my career," she says.

After moving to the United States, Chavan's first job was as a laboratory technologist at bioMérieux, a role she held for nearly two years before joining 4Life, first as a chemist and later as a microbiologist. "Microbiology was always my passion and something I always wanted to pursue," she explains. "Choosing that felt natural to me, so when I heard about an opportunity at 4Life, I applied, attended the interview, and cleared it. I am happy that I am doing it, as this is something I am passionate about."
As a microbiologist, Chavan is responsible for analyzing products, processing samples, and conducting comprehensive examinations before products are approved for distribution. "We test raw materials, environmental samples, and finished products," she says. "Once we receive samples from Quality Assurance, we begin testing them over several days. Day one typically involves testing for total microbial count, enterobacteria, yeast and mold, and coliforms, while day two includes additional microbiological testing like E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and Pseudomonas. Our goal is to ensure that all products meet quality standards, contain the appropriate components, and are free from harmful or unwanted microorganisms so they are safe for public consumption."
While product testing is a critical part of her role, Chavan says preventing contamination is one of the greatest challenges in the lab. "One of the biggest challenges we face is the risk of contamination, because that is where issues can arise and compromise the entire process," she notes. "To prevent this, we place a strong emphasis on aseptic techniques, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to ISO protocols. Maintaining strict laboratory practices is essential to ensuring accurate results and product safety."
Chavan credits her passion for microbiology as the driving force behind her daily motivation. "Microbiology is truly my passion. I enjoy continuously learning and understanding how and why things work. I am always curious about what happens when a process changes or how improvements can be made. That constant opportunity to learn and discover new things keeps me motivated and eager to continue growing in the field."
Outside the lab, Chavan values organization and work-life balance. "I stay organized in my work and maintain strong time management skills. I rely on to-do lists and keep my lab space clean and structured so I can work efficiently without wasting time searching for materials," she says. "Outside of work, I dedicate my personal time to my family."
Looking ahead, Chavan hopes to keep growing in her field. "Over the next five years, I see myself gaining experience with new microbiological technologies, refining my technical skills, and expanding my knowledge of advanced testing methods," she says. "I also hope to take on greater responsibilities, including mentoring new team members and contributing to improvements in laboratory processes."
From a research lab in France to the bench at 4Life, Chavan's path has been shaped by the same driving force at every stop: curiosity. It's what pulled her from chemistry into microbiology, and it's what keeps her chasing the next discovery.
